Hysterica Dance Co. emerged out of the late 90s and has become a creative, consistently prolific, and invigorating force in the Los Angeles dance community. Hysterica just celebrated it’s 10th anniversary season with a hugely successful retrospective at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. Hysterica has premiered numerous evening length works, such as Noir (2000), Threads (2001), Sticks and Stones (2002), and Victorious (2004) for which the company has been deservedly recognized for its intense, provocative work. In 2005, Hysterica was invited to perform at Disney Hall with the LA Philharmonic, received its first commission from Erato Philharmonia and was invited to present work in REDCAT’s Fall Studio. In 2006 Hysterica premiered the critically acclaimed “Rapture,” excerpts of which have been presented in NYC, Palm Desert and at the Brand Library and was commissioned to create two new works for Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Hysterica has always been heavily pop influenced. In the past year they have successfully crossed over from the dance world to commercial/popular culture mediums. They recently performed as the opening number for Margaret Cho's “The Sensuous Woman” and continue to create work for opera, fashion shows, special events for Sony, guest appearances on the L-word and more. Members of Hysterica Dance Co. modeled fashion designer Grant Krajecki’s (Grey Ant clothing line innovator) spring collection at the New York Spring 2007 Fashion Week. He has previously created roughly elegant retro fashion costumes for Hysterica and calls them "the coolest troupe in LA”.. Past and present Hysterica dancers were featured on Showtime’s “The L-Word” co choreographed by Kitty McNamee and Ryan Heffington.
Hysterica Dance Co. has performed extensively in the Southland and nationally at the Joyce Soho (dancenow/NYC), the Manhattan School of Music, d.u.m.b.o. dance festival and WHITE WAVE Performance Space in New York, and at Helm’s Fine Arts Center in Austin, TX. California performances include the REDCAT, James Armstrong Theater, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Ford Amphitheatre, Highways Performance Space, Sushi Performance and Visual Art Gallery in San Diego, Cal State Northridge and the Choreography Under the Stars Festival in Palm Springs (where the company received awards for Best Choreography in Small Ensemble and Best Thematic Choreography). The company has been featured in articles in Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, The Los Angeles Daily News, Coast Magazine, and Frontiers, and has been a top ten pick in Los Angeles Magazine in 2000 and 2002. Hysterica Dance Co. was nominated for a Lester Horton Award for ‘Best Performance by a Company” for their July 2002 performance of “Sticks & Stones” at the Ford Amphitheatre and again for their performance in “Split” in April 2005 and “Rapture” in 2007. Hysterica has received grants and awards from the Annenberg Foundation, the Durfee Foundation, Interarts/NEA, the Jeffrey’s Foundation and the L.A. County Arts Commission.
