“Bananaritas,” combines contemporary dance styles with theatrical spectacle to create a strange world where intimate queer relationships are being re-imagined because of a strange new symbol of social order; the banana. There is no real significance of the symbol for this new world order being a banana, other than perhaps its phallic shape. It is really just a random object for people to project their obsessions onto. Using humor and satire, “Bananaritis” suggests that societies have often become obsessed with the most ridiculous ideas, thus allowing them to be led down a path where sensible communication is no longer possible, and individual opinions are replaced by fascist ideology.

Anna Halprin &amp; director Ruedi Gerber in person!

An audience favorite at the Mill Valley Film Festival, this fascinating documentary celebrates the life and career of Anna Halprin, the American dance pioneer who has helped redefine our notion of modern art with her belief in dance’s power to teach, heal and transform at all stages of life. Halprin began her professional career in New York, but when her husband, world-renowned architect Lawrence Halprin, had to move to the San Francisco Bay Area, she accompanied him and proceeded to blaze her own trail away from the East Coast art establishment. Breath Made Visible traces her seven-decade-long career, combining archival footage and interviews with contemporaries such as Merce Cunningham, longtime collaborators John Graham and A.A. Leath, her husband Lawrence and their daughters Daria Halprin and Rana Halprin. Swiss filmmaker Ruedi Gerber shows Anna Halprin still active, creating work on her forested outdoor stage in Marin County, and as she nears the age of 90, remaining an indefatigable, inspirational and altogether engaging personality. (US/Switzerland 2009) 80 min.</div>

“Men Think They Are Better Than Grass,” inspired by the beauty and fragility of the natural world and W.S. Merwin&#39;s poetry (from which it takes its title), this piece explores the interrelationship between humanity and the environment. The work uses interactive technology to create a stage environment that changes over time, through a Wikipedia-like web component that will be uniquely different for performance to performance.

<div>The Academy of Classical Ballet – CALIFORNIA is proud to present:

&quot;Thumbelina&quot; - a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a thumb-sized girl and the many adventures that she encounters before finding her way back home to the flowers from where she was born.

A tiny girl named Thumbelina emerges from a beautiful bouquet of flowers amongst the butterflies. The generous and caring Woodland fairy makes it her responsibility to watch over the vulnerable Thumbelina. One evening, while dancing in the glade with her winged friends, she is carried off by a chorus of frogs who want the miniature maiden as their playmate. The mischievous frogs tease poor Thumbelina and leave her on a lily pad in the middle of the stream – keeping her captive. With the help of friendly fish, Thumbelina escapes and drifts along until coming across a cluster of ladybugs. As the seasons change, Thumbelina finds that she is far from home and does her best to protect herself from the elements, but when winter comes, she is in desperate straits. The vulnerable and lost Thumbelina is given shelter by an old mole who takes advantage of her situation - wanting her as his wife. She finds this prospect deeply upsetting, worsened by being far from home and in an awful situation. Thumbelina somehow finds the will to escape, fleeing to a far off land with an indebted swallow, whom she selflessly nursed back to health during the harsh winter. In a sunny field of flowers, Thumbelina is reunited with the butterflies and receives a pair of wings from the gracious Woodland Fairy to accompany her on their travels from flower to flower, happy and finally free.

Thumbelina is a timeless classic that we at The Academy of Classical Ballet – CALIFORNIA are truly proud to present. We welcome you to our debut performance and hope that you will share this special experience with us and our talented, hard-working, and amazing dancers. Your encouragement and support serves as tangible gift that we at The Academy couldn&#39;t be more thankful for. We hope to see you at our show.

Prajna Within takes the audience on a trip through the complexity of the human mind in relation to our emotions. Thoughts and emotions are incredibly interconnected, but our world tends to favor the mind and neglect emotional well-being. This journey hopes to touch the audience on many levels of the human condition. When individuals activate the path of self-awareness, amazing opportunities open up for relationships, for our own health, and for the health of our planet.

The Tenth Dancer

Saturday, March 13, 2009, 7 PM
Khmer Arts Academy Studio
1364 Obispo Avenue
Long Beach, CA 90804
Free and Open to the Public

From 1975 – 1979, Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge followers decimated Cambodia’s cultural, economic, and social infrastructures. Those with ties to education, elite society, and religion were targeted for execution in order to birth a new peasant society based on rice production. Cambodia’s classical dancers, whose very livelihoods were linked to the royal court, hid their identities in the many labor camps across the country in order to survive. However, it is estimated that only one of ten dancers managed to escape Pol Pot’s living nightmare.

Join Prumsodun Ok and the Khmer Arts Academy community for Sally Ingleton’s “The Tenth Dancer”, an intimate portrait of the relationship between a teacher and her student as they work to revive the art of Cambodian classical dance. Set in war-torn Cambodia, it follows Em Theay, then director of the National Dance Company of Cambodia, and her student Pen Sok Chea through their memories and homes, rehearsals and performances to make visible the devastating realities of war – offering a glimpse of the rebirth of Cambodia’s arts and the revival of the spirits of its land and people. The film is fifty-five minutes long, in Khmer and English with English subtitles.
